Cumulus Networks Rolls Switching Appliance

Cumulus Networks has launched a new switching hardware and networking software open this week packaged as a turnkey device targeting new users of web-scale networks along with previous users accustomed to power datacenter networking platforms as devices .

Cumulus, Mountain View, Calif., Said on Thursday (Jan. 19) that its new "Express" offer includes pre-loaded 1G to 100G platforms with new Linux network operating system features along with optics and cables.

The new platform comes with a pre-loaded switch that includes a Linux network OS license along with a range of switching capabilities, including 1 G-T, 10G / 10 G-T, 40G and 100G. The network device also includes a pre-activated license key and standard cables and optics designed to speed up deployment.

The network specialist says the introduction of the platform is based on market momentum over the past year, which included the introduction of enterprise cloud offerings as an OpenStack add-on. It also achieved certification on the VMware (NYSE: VMW) NSX vSphere network virtualization platform targeting software-defined data centers.

Cumulus Networks previously partnered with software networking virtualization specialist Midokura in an open network initiative to create alternatives to various implementations of OpenFlow networks. These efforts have been promoted by Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) and other Open Compute Project members who seek to encourage switch manufacturers to deploy standard platforms that can handle a variety of network operating systems.
